The Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control (Center) is located within the Maryland Department of Health (MDH). The Center’s Mission is: Improving Maryland's Health by Preventing and Controlling Chronic Disease. The Center seeks to encourage all Marylanders to embrace the state activity—walking. The Center works with local health departments and other community organizations to implement activities such as the Safe Routes to School program and establishing policies in worksites and early childcare centers to increase physical activity. The Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO) is a division of the MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration, dedicated to saving lives and preventing injuries by reducing motor vehicle crashes through a network of traffic safety programs. MDOT SHA’s Be Street Wise pedestrian safety campaign targets all roadway users, as it is an issue that affects the entire community -- young and senior, drivers and walkers, during the day and at night. On average, more than 100 pedestrians are killed each year in Maryland, and most of the incidents are preventable. The campaign reminds everyone to follow the rules of the road and traffic laws, while providing roadway access and mobility for all users. Through grassroots outreach, public relations and marketing, MDOT SHA is reminding drivers to stay alert, obey the posted speed limit and stop for pedestrians.

The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for approximately 2,000 miles of roadways and transportation infrastructure including 900 bridges, bike lanes, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, grassy areas and street trees within Prince George’s County. DPW&T’s activities range from managing large-scale capital projects to day-to-day maintenance. DPW&T also coordinates Vision Zero Prince George’s County, a multidisciplinary strategy to eliminate crash fatalities and serious injuries and advance the safety of all roadway users in Prince George’s County.

Commuter Services promotes Better Ways to Work with a variety of incentives and tools to help make our roads less crowded while providing reliable transportation alternatives. The Section promotes alternatives to the single occupant vehicle – including transit, car/vanpooling, biking and bikeshare, walking and telework -- to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and help achieve the County’s climate goals. Programs and services are concentrated in the County’s five Transportation Management Districts and other activity centers. Commuting information and assistance is also provided to businesses, employees and residents throughout the County to support transportation options, working with other local, state and regional agencies to improve effectiveness of those options.

Human life takes priority over mobility and other objectives of the road system. Human error is inevitable and the transportation system should be designed to anticipate error so the consequences are not serious or fatal injuries. Through the use of data-informed and equitable approaches, Montgomery County will systematically update the roadway network and utilize targeted education and enforcement to build a culture of safety to eliminate serious and fatal collisions from Montgomery County roadways by 2030.
